The history of Gibson Les Paul dates
back to the 1950’s. Gibson Les Paul the solid body electric guitar was first
sold in 1952. The Gibson Les Paul was first designed by the popular guitarist
Les Paul in collaboration with Ted McCarthy. It is one of the most popular and
well known electric guitar in the world apart from that of the Telecaster and
Fender Stratocaster. So the Gibson Les Paul was the outcome of the
collaboration between Gibson Guitar Corporation and the late electronics
inventor and jazz guitarist Les Paul. Since the launch of the first guitar in
the 1952 the relationship between Les Paul and Gibson Guitar Corporation was

models in the market. Gold top, Custom, Junior, Special, Les Paul SG and the

that it is still the favorites of guitarists and musical artist around the
world. Epiphone was the main rival of Gibson Guitar Corporation until the
company was weakened by the aftermath of the First World War was subsequently
absorbed by Gibson’s. So the Epiphone Les Paul is a line of solid body electric
guitar produced by Epiphone which is a subsidiary of the Gibson Guitar
Corporation. Epiphone manufactures the modesty priced version of the world
famous Gibson Les Paul and other budget models at a lower cost in the Asian
market. Visually and physically it is similar to that of Gibson Les Paul. Owing
to the low price and the identical look of the guitar with that of the Gibson’s
Les Paul many guitarist prefer to buy Epiphone as one of their first guitars.
Epiphone has also launched models like Les Paul standard, Les Paul custom, Les
Paul black beauty 3, Les Paul ES, Les Paul studio, Les Paul – 100, Les Paul
special II, Les Paul gold top and so on. Epiphone Les Paul standard is very
similar to that of Gibson Les Paul standard. It has almost all the feature as
that of a Gibson Les Paul Standard, such as solid mahogany or alder neck,
Alnico Classic Hum buckers, Set neck mahogany neck with a rosewood Fret board,
Grover machine head and a Tune-o-matic bridge. Owing to these features some
consider this as the flagship Les Paul model ever manufacture by the Epiphone.
Apart from this there is “Plain-Top” model that showcases a plain maple top and
a “Plus-Top” model that showcases a flame maple top. The list of Guitarists using
the Les Paul series include Slash, Gary Moore, Peter Frampton, Michael

Frehley, Billy Gibbons, Eric Clapton, Lou Pallo, Sir Paul McCartney and so on
