TESTING GOLD YOURSELF TO
FIND OUT IF IT'S REAL
Gold is one of the oldest and most precious metal.
Gold is the most malleable and ductile of all metals. A gram of gold can be
beaten into thin sheet of one square meter. Gold is a good conductor of heat
and electricity. Gold strongly reflects infrared light and infrared radiation.
Gold readily creates alloy with other metals. These alloys are produced to
modify the hardness and other metallurgical properties of gold. Gold is
yellowish in colour as compared to other metals which are gray or silverfish in
colour. Owing to these features, finding out the purity has also become the
difficult part. So for testing the purity of the gold we can implement various
methods. So the first and the simplest test to ensure the purity of Gold are to
use a magnet to see if it responds. In this method a magnet is used to ensure
the quality of the gold. Use a magnet and see if it responds. If it is
attracted to magnet strongly then it is not gold and if it is attracted lightly
then it may be plated or impure as pure gold does not respond to Gold. Once it
passes the magnetic test the next test that u can bring on is the nitric acid
test. Acid testing kits can be easily found on the nearby chemical shop or from
the internet. Once you buy an acid testing kit you will get a testing stone and
a small bottle of nitro hydrochloric acid. So all you have to do is to rub the item firmly on the rubbing
stone and drip a single drop of acid onto the area that you have just polished. If the area remains same in colour your item
is gold and if it turns yellow orange color then it is a lower quality karat
and if it is any other color it is not gold.
