Capital Punishment- Should It Be Retained Or Abolished….????

Capital punishment also known as the death penalty or execution can be described as the sentence of death upon a person by a judicial establishment or a judicial process, as a punishment for an offence. So the crimes for which the capital punishment is given are called capital crimes or capital offences. The origin of the word is from Latin word Capitalis meaning “regarding the head”. So in the olden day capital crimes were punished by severing the head from the body. So capital punishment has been there for centuries and it is still in use in many countries. But now only 58 countries practice capital punishment and as many as 96 countries have withdrawn from the scenario of capital punishment.
The methods of capital punishments practiced by different countries may be classified as:-

  ü  Electric Chair
  ü  Court Martial
  ü  Hanging, and
  ü  Lethal Injection

So it has been and is still a controversial subject all over the world. So the question is whether it should be Retained or Abolished.
Now this can be discussed from two view points:-

  Ø  Global Scenario; and
  Ø  Indian scenario.

Talking about the Global Scenario, as many as 58 countries still practice capital punishment and they feel that it is essential for maintaining law and order within the country. For extreme crime capital punishment is necessary. In fact the truth is “ Harsher The Punishment, Lesser The Crime”. This is visible from the countries that are practicing Capital punishments.

Now from the Indian scenario, India is one among the 58 countries that practice Capital Punishment. In India their aim is such that “even if ten guilty persons get away, one innocent should not be punished”. So when capital punishment is awarded to a person in India the judge who reads out the judgment has to spell out the word “Rarest Of The Rarest”.
There are different schools of view about abolishing Capital Punishment

         1.      Eye for eye is not an answer
         2.      Only God can take back life.

Apart from this, the method of carrying out the punishment is also debatable and the opposers are of the opinion that “we are living in a civilized society and the person dying should also be given dignity”. So the question is - “Should Capital punishment be retained or abolished?”
